Royal Mail  And CWU Safety Alert  Over Death Caused By Swing Barriers

Following the recent serious accident, Royal Mail and CWU have jointly issued a Safety Alert for the Attention of All 95,000 Royal Mail Drivers warning them about unsecured swing arm barrier gates as it is suspected that unsecured gates swung into the paths of the Royal Mail Vans involved in the Keighley and Somerset accidents. The latest incident in Keighley was fortunately not fatal unlike that which took place in Somerset resulting in the death of the postal van driver.

The photographs provided by CWU Area Health and Safety Representative Mick Gledhill (Bradford & Dist Amal)  show the resultant damage to the vehicle in the latest incident).

The Alert advises of the continued risk of unsecured swing arm barrier gates which have the potential to move, particularly in windy weather or from the vibration of passing vehicles.
